　映画『スター・ウォーズ』シリーズのチューバッカ役で知られる米俳優・ピーター・メイヒューが自宅で亡くなったことが分かった。74歳だった。

　家族が公式Twitterに投稿した内容によると、現地時間4月30日に北テキサスの自宅で逝去。死因は明らかにされていない。家族に看取られての最期だったという。家族によって公開されたメッセージの中で、ピーター・メイヒューの代表作となった『スター・ウォーズ』への出演は、彼にとって役柄以上の意味合いがあったこと、家族やファンたちとたくさんの関係を築き上げられたこと、そして彼の功績として、自身の慈善団体「ピーター・メイヒュー」を築き上げたことをはじめ、チャリティー活動に積極的だったことなどが挙げられている。

　ピーター・メイヒューの訃報を受けて、『スター・ウォーズ』シリーズのルーク・スカイウォーカー役で知られるマーク・ハミルは、「大きな体の彼は、心も大きかった。そして、いつも僕を笑顔にしてくれる存在で、大好きな親友でした」「私達が共有した思い出に感謝します」とツイート。このほか、『スター・ウォーズ』公式も「私たちは、ピーター・メイヒューが逝去したというニュースに深く悲しんでいます。1976年以来、ピーターによるチューバッカの描写は、キャラクターの成功とスター・ウォーズそのものに欠くことのできない存在となっています」と追悼している。
